About the event

Join us in the heart of the woodlands for a hands-on introduction to green woodworking, designed for both children (ages 8+) and adults. Whether you're a curious beginner or a crafty parent, these sessions offer a unique opportunity to learn traditional skills while connecting with nature.

Each week builds on the last, introducing new techniques, tools, and projects. You'll walk away from every session with a handmade item and a deeper appreciation for working with freshly harvested wood.


Course Outline:

Session 1:
• Introduction to green and seasoned wood
• Understanding tree growth and reading the grain
• Tool safety and usage: knives, drawknives, spoon knives, saws, and more

Session 2:
• Working with green woods like hazel and ash
• Crafting woodland tools: splitting wedges and mallets

​

Session 3:
• Getting creative with simple carving projects: wands and butter knives

​

Session 4:
• Crafting practical kitchen items: spatulas and spoons


Each session concludes with a completed project. Final finishing touches like sanding can be done at home to perfect your creation.

Families are welcome—this is a great bonding experience for parents and children alike!
Children (ages 8+) and Adults (18+) will attend separate sessions tailored to their skill level and learning style.


All equipment is provided as well as refreshments.

About the event

Session One: Safety and Blacksmithing Fundamentals
• Introduction to essential blacksmithing techniques and tooling.
• Comprehensive safety briefing.


Session Two: Small Project
• Create a beginner-level project to build confidence and practice techniques.


Session Three: Medium Project
• Work on a more advanced project to refine skills.


Session Four: Decorative Designs
• Explore creative blacksmithing by crafting decorative items.


Projects (Subject to Change)
Some of the items participants may create include:
• Coat hangers
• Fire pokers
• Snakes
• Snails
• Tongs
• Brackets
• Hinges
• Bangles

 

Staff and Safety
• All staff are professional blacksmiths with up-to-date DBS certification and first aid training. These documents are available upon request.
• A break for snacks and refreshments will be provided during the session to ensure participants can rest and stay safe.
• Blacksmithing is physically demanding and requires careful monitoring, so we ensure ample rest periods to prevent injury.

 

Please Note:
While we maintain a strict health and safety protocol, blacksmithing is inherently a hazardous activity involving fire and heavy tools. Full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will be provided.


Participant Requirements:
• Hair: Long hair must be tied back.
• Clothing: Wear suitable clothing and footwear (no poly-cotton).
• Behavior: Children must behave respectfully towards instructors and site visitors.

Step off the beaten path and reconnect with the land during Wild Roots, a one-of-a-kind weekend experience in ancient woodland, where you'll immerse yourself in essential wilderness living and homesteading skills. Running from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, June 6th–8th, 2025, this hands-on course is designed to inspire self-sufficiency, confidence, and a deeper connection to the natural world.


Begin by establishing your basecamp and fire, and meet your fellow adventurers around the flames on Friday evening.

 

Then, dive into two full days of practical and immersive learning, including:
• Woodland foraging and open-fire cookery
• Fire-making mastery
• Hunting skills and tracking techniques
• Traditional butchery and wild game preparation
• Food preservation methods
• Wildlife awareness and nature connection
• Introductory woodworking and tool use


Spend your nights under the stars in a hammock beneath the canopy, surrounded by the sounds of the wild. All meals and refreshments are included, prepared by participants using fresh vegetables, wild game, and alternative dietary options—cooked communally over an open fire.
